Difference between CBD and CBG

Many of us are familiar with cannabidiol (CBD), but you may not have heard of cannabigerol (CBG)? In this post, the team at CBDology will explain the difference between the two cannabinoids as well as the benefits.

What is CBG (cannabigerol)?

Like CBD, CBG is one of the 120 cannabinoids found in the hemp plant that, when consumed, will interact with cannabinoid receptors in the human body. The two main cannabinoid receptors in the body are known as CB1, which is associated with the nervous system, and CB2 which is more associated with inflammation. These cannabinoids and receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which helps to regulate functions such as pain, appetite and inflammation in the body.

The human body makes its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, and the cannabis plant boasts many plant-based cannabinoids, called phytocannabinoids. The two most well-known phytocannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

However, there are also several other phytocannabinoids that derive from a parent cannabinoid known as cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and the precursor to CBDA and THCA. This means it is ‘stem cell’ and the foundation of all the other cannabinoids. With heat and time, the CBGA can be converted into the non-acidic form of CBG. In most cannabis plants, CBG only makes up for around 1%.

What are the Differences between CBD & CBG?

As you’ll likely be aware, CBD, unlike THC, has no psychoactive effects when consumed. Research suggests CBD can be beneficial for reducing anxiety, inflammation and even seizures in children.

CBG is also a non-psychoactive substance. Currently, there is a lot less available research into the effects of CBG on the human body when consumed. However, as a different type of cannabinoid, it is thought to have it’s own benefits and uses.

What are the potential benefits of CBG?

Described by some as the mother of all cannabinoids, CBG may offer a wide range of therapeutic benefits.

Like CBD, CBG has been suggested to possess potential benefits such as reducing stress and anxiety in users and helping to maintain a more positive mood. It’s also believed to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the human body.

However, more recent research suggests that CBG as a compound can provide more unique benefits such as stimulating the growth of new brain cells and stimulating bone growth. It’s also thought that CBG possesses anti-tumour and anti-bacterial properties that may be able to assist with conditions such as glaucoma, bladder dysfunction and skin conditions such as psoriasis.
